구스타프 클림트 Gustav Klimt, 1862 ~ 1918
황금빛 화가
화려하고 관능적인 분위기의 그림인 <키스>작품으로 유명한 구스타프 클림트는 원래 보수적인 미술 단체의 일원이었으나 기존의 낡고 판에 박힌 사상에 더 이상 의존하지 않고, 미술이 삶과의 상호작용을 통해서 인간의 내면적인 의미를 미술을 통해 전달되길 원했다. 클림트는 금속 세공가출신인 부친과 당시 유럽을 유행한 아르누보 양식의 영향을 받아 화려한 황금색과 장식적 형태를 사용해 작품을 만들었다. 또한 그는 그 당시 유행하던 프로이트 심리분석이론의 영향을 받아 심리적 내면세계를 작품에 드러내기 위해 노력했다. 그는 작품에 에로티시즘과 강박증을 표현하였는데 아르누보 양식으로 지나치게 화려하게 치장했기 때문에 많은 사람들로부터 비난을 받기도 했다. 클림트의 작품은 초기 표현주의로 대변되며 이후 에곤 쉴레 등의 신 표현주의에 많은 영향을 주었다.
